Basic Ignition Parts
Spark Plugs: Spark plugs are good indicators of engine condition. Removing and inspecting spark plugs tell you a lot about how well the engine is running and what may be causing problems.
All spark plugs should be removed and checked every 30,000 miles – even if your car is “low maintenance” – you’re told to change spark plugs at 100,000 miles. This prevents the plugs from seizing in the block, causing expensive repairs down the road.
Always note which plug came from which cylinder. This tells you if a particular cylinder has a problem. BEWARE: New spark plugs can make a difference in your car’s performance but only if replaced with the appropriate OE replacement plug.

Critical to the pump’s operation is the drive belt that turns it. On most newer cars this is the engine’s timing belt. On older cars, the pump and belt are external and run off the main crankshaft pulley with a “V” or flat belt.

Things You’ll Need
– Plastic knife
– Scrub brush
– Linseed oil
– Tar-removing product (kerosene or Prep-Sol)
– Water-dispersing products (WD-40 or RP-7)
Use the plastic knife and the screwdriver to scrape off the tar. The plastic knife will help prevent puncturing or damaging the rubber. If you use a screwdriver, be careful to avoid piercing the tire.
Use the stiff scrubbing brush and lots of elbow grease and detergent to scrub off the tar. Try to remove as much tar and gravel as possible. Use a stiff scrubbing brush to scrub off the tar.
Apply the linseed oil on the tires and let it seep into the tar for about 25 minutes. Take your plastic knife and attempt to scrape off more tar.

2. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth, reinsert it fully, and remove. The dipstick should have markings that designate the engine oil level. A sheen of oil should indicate the engine’s current level.
3. If the oil level is at or below the bottom ‘fill’ line, add ½ quart of oil into the reservoir opening—located under the screw-cap mounted on top of the engine. Wait 2 minutes, then recheck the level. If it’s still low, add more oil incrementally.

Protect Your Core

Clear Your Vision and Pad Your Bubble
Scan the road carefully when the going gets wet because hidden pools of water can mean sudden losses of traction. Note your visor– is its tint obscuring the subtleties of road surfaces? How shift gears is one of the important things that must be mastered sepedah while riding a motorcycle. For starters, mastering how to shift gears is something that must be learned. But have no fear: shifting a bike can be easily mastered with practice, and is much simpler than it looks.
There are three basic controls to operate when it comes to shifting a motorcycle: 1) the throttle, 2) the clutch, and 3) the gear selector. The throttle revs the engine, the clutch engages and disengages the transmission, and the gear selector– you guessed it– selects the gear. Pull the clutch towards you using your left hand, and you can rev the engine without moving the bike forward. But release the clutch while the transmission is “in gear” (ie, not in neutral), and you’ll move the bike forward.
The gear pattern is selected by clicking a lever with your left foot, and is typically laid out as follows:
- 6th gear (if applicable)
- 5th gear
- 4th gear
- 3rd gear
- 2nd gear
- 1st gear
Proper shifting technique requires the following maneuvers to be performed smoothly and deliberately:
- Disengaging the clutch (using your left hand to pull it towards you)
- Selecting the appropriate gear using the shift lever (with your left foot)

When storing cars for long periods of time it’s a good idea to remove the battery from the automobile. If possible store them in a clean and dry environment with moderate temperatures.
This way when it’s time to fire up the vehicle the battery can be charged, tested and installed.

- Locate and Open the Filter Housing
With your hood open and safely propped, locate the air filter housing. On any car made in the last 20 years or so, it’ll be in a black plastic case with metal clips on the sides. You’ll also see a black tube going into the plastic case on most cars. Flip the little metal clips downward. If they are tight, slide a flat-head screwdriver in between the clip and the case from the top, and pop it off. Some housings will also have a nut holding them from the top.
- Squirrel Your Nuts
If you removed nuts from the top of your filter housing, be sure to put them in a safe secure location. You don’t want to lose these! In the vehicle used in our example, the top of the filter housing comes off, so we put them in the housing top where they couldn’t roll away. You can even stick them in your pocket. Whatever you do, put them someplace safe.

Something as simple as leaving the headlights or overhead dome light on can drain your battery overnight, meaning your car won’t turn over in the morning. This dead battery will still hold a full charge if you recharge it.

Radiator Flush: The coolant in your radiator doesn’t last forever. Over time it can break down and start to corrode the inside of your radiator. This can lead to cooling problems and radiator repair. A radiator flush once a year is cheap insurance against radiator repairs.
Replace Your Air Filter: You should replace your air filter twice a year, so now’s a good time to get that 5-minute job out of the way.
Tire Checks: Summer traveling could mean driving in the rain. The tread on your tires must be adequate for rainy weather or you could end up in a ditch, or worse.
Checking the tread depth on your tires take one minute. While you’re at it, you shouldcheck your tire pressure, too.

Experiencing the engine overheat is a very bad state. The overheating can cause severe damage and maintenance costs for cars. 1. Low Coolant By a large margin, the most common cause for engine overheating is simply a low coolant level. Your engine’s cooling system relies on coolant to circulate and remove heat from the engine. If you don’t have enough coolant in there to do the job, heat will build up and your engine will overheat. No amount of running the heater in the summer will help if you don’t have enough coolant in the radiator to transfer that heat.
2. Electric Cooling Fan Failure If you have an electric cooling fan that isn’t coming on, this can cause your engine to overheat. The electric cooling fan draws cooler air through your radiator when your

Oil pressure – or more precisely the lack of it – in certain parts of your car’s engine can become a major repair nightmare. All engines lose a certain amount of oil pressure over time as normal wear increases bearing clearances. But unusually low oil pressure in an engine, regardless of mileage, is often an indication that something is seriously wrong and requires immediate repairs.
That “tappet” noise may be only one sticking lifter but it may also indicate an oil flow problem that will eventually cause damage to at least one valve.

Modern engines with hydraulic lifters, tight tolerance bearings and miniature oil filters require conscientious monitoring of oil pressure.

First a word of caution on fluids – particularly for import cars. Car manufacturer’s are required to specify in their owner’s manuals all the fluids to be used in your car and the manufacturer’s OE specifications for each. Make sure to check here first – BEFORE adding any fluids to your car.
Check your antifreeze (radiator fluid). This should be checked periodically throughout the year but is especially critical to protecting your car in winter. Your car should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is 50/50. Remember never to remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled. Flushing the system prior to refilling is also recommended about every 24 months.
